A brutal sport where contestants commonly fight to the death. It was introduced by the Orcs and allegedly created by their god, Orion. It has not spread far from orc tradition, but it has entered The Obsidian Spires, Nation of Lira as a form of judgment of criminals.

Rules

  • Spell Ball goes until a side has scored 3 out of 5 available points.
  • The ball starts in the center of the arena with each side 30 feet from the ball.
    • The ball resets after each point is scored or the ball leaves the arena
  • In order to pick up the ball a team must be within 5 feet of the ball and beat a DC 15 STR check. Alternatively a spell slot may be expended to cause the ball to float near the caster, which requires concentration. This is an action.
  • Stealing a ball from a player that holds the ball requires a contested STR check. If they are using a spell slot, then a higher spell slot must be used to steal the ball or their concentration must be broken. Stealing is a reaction.
  • To score a point the ball must be thrown in the opposing teams torch from a distance of 20 feet away or more.
  • Throwing the ball is 20 feet + 5 feet for each level spell slot used to initially take the ball. Throwing happens in a straight line and takes an action.
  • If you are within 5 feet of the ball’s thrown trajectory, then you may intercept the ball with a DEX save DC 15 + 1 for each level spell slot used to initially take the ball. This takes a reaction.
  • Killing members of the opposing team is not penalized.

Rewards for winning spell ball differ depending on the circumstance. One thing that is consistent is the privilege of walking away with your life.
